As I mentioned in my last blog, I have a student teacher in my classroom this semester. I want to give Mrs. Lane a huge shoutout for her excellent work. I also want to take some time to write about some misconceptions about student teachers in the classroom.
I think that most people believe when I got a student teacher in my room, I could just prop my feet up and relax. At 3:20, I should be able to go home with no worries. I've actually had people ask me why I was still at school after hours when I have Mrs. Lane. Well, let me tell you why!
First of all, let me give you a little history of Mrs. Lane and me. We go way back. We have been friends for...I just counted the years, and it's insane, but I think 40ish years! Is this possible? Anyway, a very long time. This friendship has made this experience so incredible. We have ways of communicating with each other without being afraid to tell each other how we feel. She has ideas and isn't afraid to share them with me. I have things to share with her and I'm not afraid to give her all the help and encouragement she needs. We just work together so well.
Which brings me to the reason I won't leave at 3:20. That's when Mrs. Lane and I can reflect and share some laughs about the day. Then we can plan and figure out what to do next. She is learning to teach her own class, but I'm supposed to show her how that works. How can I show her if I'm not there?
We still have a couple of weeks left and I know we will make the best of this time. It's been so fun sharing all of my stories and words of wisdom with Stacey. I wish her nothing but the best in her future of teaching. Hopefully, we will get to be co-teachers again someday soon!
